I was cleaning up my basement and I noticed a large bin containing white tiles of various sizes. I thought it would be perfect to make use of them to tile the front porch table. I started by laying out the tiles in different designs to see what worked. For this project, I took inspiration from Piet Mondrian's famous geometric compositions. From there, I glued down the tiles and waited two days for the glue to cure. The final step was grouting the table.
This project taught me about decision-making in art. Artists make decisions about all sorts of things all the time, while some art factors are restricted. I chose the color and size of the tile and the color of the grout. The size of the table and the materials available to me in my basement restricted my decisions-making. But it also well-known that, counterintuitively, restrictions encourage creativity. I am happy with this small summer project and I think the table fits aesthetically on the porch.
